Her credentials declare mastery of her Surgical craft that she is trained at but the need to acquire multiple skills has been her soul’s calling and she is familiar with the needs of the community. She knew that better facilities and opportunities do not let a regular medico return to their hometowns and experts rarely visit small towns. Born and brought up in one and happily returned back to her roots, she is the Consultant Surgeon and Director along with her mother Dr. Sumittra Chauhan at Shanno Devi Nursing Home, Pilkhuwa, District Hapur in Western U.P. INDIA. This is a small private health facility with inpatient services along with operative services functional since 1979.
Apart from assisting and supporting OBG services at her own hospital since her graduation in 1998 which was more the need of the hour, she devoted two years in exclusive rural service at Missionary hospitals in Sardhana (Dist .Meerut) and Kotdwar, (Dist. Pauri Garhwal) in the remote heartland of U.P. Her experience in medically underserved peripheral areas has always kept her aware and sensitive to the health care needs of people in villages and small towns.
She understands the need for better quality service to be made affordable and available to the less privileged people of small towns which they lack. Taking her late brother Dr. Prashant Singh’s vision forward who died in a fatal road accident in 2003 and aided by her Orthopedic husband Dr. Albert D’Souza she has been instrumental in conceptualizing and upgrading this existing facility to extend its services in General Surgery and Orthopedics since 2012.
Having served, trained and worked at high volume prestigious centers in metro cities she has taken cue to develop similar low volume but fully capable models that continue to provide health care to people. She considers herself to be fortunate to have such a long association in community. It is always challenging sustaining affordable health models and meeting the expectation that a common man has from health experts. According to her, “I understand the mindset, language and attitudes of community at large having never been away from it in reality and born as one of them and this has helped me tremendously in establishing an excellent Doctor and patient relationship which is the very root of quality care in any health organization”. At Shanno Devi Nursing Home, she strives for delivering excellence at her surgical work and her best reward is her satisfied operated patients returning home safely. Having treated thousands of patients in a career span of thirty years plus she happily states “When they are in peace in their bodies, I feel so much peace in my mind and in gratefulness for what I can do and deliver right here, right now”.
